Season 2022-2023
Blue Remembered Hills
by Dennis Potter Directed by Peter Larkin 17 to 24 September 2022 It's a hot summer's day in 1943 and seven children play, laugh, sing and cry somewhere in the woods just before tea-time. In a whirl of constant activity, their lives are brim-full of joy and horror, anxiety and delight. Dennis Potter's affectionate study captures the traumas of childhood beneath the apparently innocent surface. He reminds us that adults are children who have simply substituted subtlety for spontaneity. That rose-tinted nostalgia for the 'blue remembered hills' of our youth is not always justified. |
The Moderate Soprano
by David Hare Directed by Geoffrey Shindler 19 to 26 Nov 2022 The Moderate Soprano is a 2015 play by the British playwright David Hare. It is a historical play dealing with John Christie, his founding of Glyndebourne Opera and his romance and marriage with Audrey Mildmay, the eponymous soprano. |
After the Dance
by Terence Rattigan Directed by John O'Connell 21 to 28 Jan 2023 After the Dance by Terence Rattigan is a hilarious, heartbreaking and hauntingly beautiful play. Despite being a critical success when it premiered in 1938, the looming declaration of war meant it was quickly forgotten until a 2010 revival at the National Theatre brought it back to prominence. |
Zack
by Harold Brighouse Directed by Dave Eyre 25 March to 1 April 2023 Zack is the half-witted son of a wedding purveyor whose good heart and cheerfulness are a far greater asset than his brother's crafty greed. This charming story tells in the most amusing fashion how Zack eventually wins self-respect and his bride. |
The Titfield Thunderbolt
by Philip Goulding Directed by Andrea Parle 20 to 27 May 2023 Based on a 1953 British comedy film written by TEB Clarke and directed by Charles Crichton. The film starred Stanley Holloway, Naunton Wayne, George Relph and John Gregson. This hilarious play is about a group of villagers trying to keep their branch line operating after British Railways decided to close it. |
